Toivottavasti viimeinen lumisade

Riihijärvi heräsi aamulla lumisateeseen. Olen jatkanut vielä lintujen ruokintaa. Linnunsiemeniä on kadonnut kilokaupalla väsyneiden muuttomatkalaisten nokkiin.

Day Seven: The Excitement Continues

Our numbers are pretty stable right now. I think we've added a couple observations and species since yesterday, but I don't expect a huge increase over the next few days. At this point, we're concentrating on increasing our proportion of research quality observations, currently at 37.2%.

I've been scrolling through the observations today, looking for "interesting" ones. Shardintx found Agrobacterium (

Rant about unfairness

Every single day I see animals being abused and neglected. Sometimes, I have to pause and mute my social medias just so I can have peace of mind and bring back sanity. Watching this sad reality again and again, in different stories and format, is so sad and depressing.

I just don't understand why rich people could not do something about. Heck, some of them can afford an island by themselves, so why not donate even 0.1% of their profit to help make this world a better place for th...

Thank you!

Great work on everyone's observations over the weekend! We have surpassed our goal of 10K observations (by a long-shot) and the numbers continue to grow. The deadline to post all of your observations is Midnight May 5. It's a bit of a "soft" deadline as the CNC organizers will be pulling all of the numbers by 9am on May 6. Probably in the afternoon the global results will be announced and we will consider the event complete!

One last thing I would like to ask of all of you is th...

It is a very close race in this year's CNC and we need to press on with all that we have.

We are almost at the finish line and what a challenge it has turned out to be. As of May 02, 2024 the top three Canadian cities are: Vancouver, Montreal and Calgary. The Vancouver MVRD is ranked 40th globally with 13,170 observations. A close second is Montreal ranked 41st globally with 13,144 observations. That is only a difference of 26 observations (or a difference of 0.1%).
The third Canadian city is Calgary but is just under 2,000 observations behind so it looks like a race for ...

Observations Window has closed, but still do some ID and uploading of photos (if you have some taken during the window)

Thank you everyone! Your have really stepped up to help out our region with the CNC 2024!

If you have any more photos, be sure to add them to iNaturalist before May5.

Also, if you have some time, go through and ID some of the observations in our project that haven't been ID'd yet!

We are closing in our Heart of Texas so every photo counts!

Thanks again for getting out there and making some great observations!

Priority Invasive Plants

The Columbia Shuswap Invasive Species Society updated our priority plant lists on April 9 at the annual Land Manager Meeting to guide the inventory, treatment, and monitoring of invasive plants in the region.

Priority Plant Lists
These lists contain six rankings based on how established a species is and their potential impact within the region. In the meeting, hoary cress was discussed as a species to keep at the highest possible alert level, and cheatgrass was highlighted as...

Rappel : Vous pouvez encore participer!

On our way to our biggest CNC ever!

Woot! We just past the city's previous record number of observations, from the big 2019 CNC, and there's still three days of identifying and uploading to go.

We've got to identify or upload 148 more species to top our species tally from 2019, and then 2024 will with...

Looking after the environment and our people.

It is really important to Australians that we look after our environment. We do not have another planet to go to. I began this project to better understand the environmental impact of the project at Miriam Vale. It is to this end that I ask for help to find species that may be lost or threatened if the project goes ahead.

Hello everyone! 😅

Great job this year, and an extra special thanks to everyone who showed up to participate at our in-field events at parks in the community! 🤳🏼🦄

Results are being tabulated, and that's where you can help out if you so choose! 🥳 We have until 11:59 PM on this Sunday, May 5th to finish submitting observations and finalizing IDs on all those observations.

➡️ As of this journal entry, there are still 1,840 observations that need an ID confirmation...

iNat Year 2024 - goals and monthly recaps (-April)

So I have decided on this year's iNaturalist goals.

  1. First and foremost continue my streak which started on 30th Dec 2020. Since I don't work so much and I also don't have any international flights scheduled, it's just a matter of perseverance. If I don't find time during the day, I can always do my nightly moth-walk of about 1,5 h.
  2. Make a photo book at the end of the year. I started this in 2014 and it's growing into a nice collection. For that I should find at least...

Notable firefly observations- April 2024

April was the beginning of firefly season in much of the country, with Spring Tree-top Flashers pupating and beginning to display further and further north. It was also a big month for flashing fireflies in Florida and Texas. And of course,

Thank You City Nature Challenge 2024: Brazos Valley Group

I am deeply grateful for the incredible participation you all have shown during the City Nature Challenge observation days! Your contributions have provided us with a remarkable yearly snapshot of the biodiversity in our area. The numbers this year are truly astounding, and I am eagerly anticipating how they will evolve in the coming days as the ID verification process continues.

It's a good time to start identifying some species as the weather looks rai...

Thank You!

I can't thank everyone enough for all the entries that have been made so far this year! We have had an incredible amount of identifications within the park and we are only in May!!! I am extremely excited to see what we are able to gather by the end of 2024.

This Bioblitz will help immensely with our species identification list that I plan to create in 2025.

Keep up the awesome work! From everyone here at Rocky Fork State Park, THANK YOU!!!!

Casting a Wider Net

Temperatures are climbing, and the southeastern woods are ringing with loud cicada choruses! More observations are coming in of holes and nymphs in Brood XIII territory, so they're not far behind their southern cousins. Keep an eye out for the black patches on northern nymphs, which will appear just before they're ready to emerge and undergo their final molt.

In light of all the records coming in, I've broadened the project parameters to include "Needs ID" observations. I hope th...
